Igniting Passion
for Learning

In today’s era of information overload, improving training effectiveness and motivating learners are critical challenges. At ATD24, Doug Clayton shared his extensive research and practical insights on leveraging video to enhance learning outcomes and inspire team creativity.

Speaker: Doug Clayton
Topic: Total Recall: Evidence That Using Film Improves Learning and Inspires
Author: eHRD High-Tech Division, Wei-Hsiang Lin, Manager

Key Insights

At the start of his session, the moderator, Karin, conducted a live poll, asking participants how they use AI. Responses varied widely, including content generation, brainstorming, and academic writing assistance, highlighting AI’s expanding role in learning and development.

Doug Clayton’s session focused on how video can improve learning, engage individuals, and cultivate leadership skills. He outlined four key takeaways:

Empirical evidence supports video as an effective learning tool.
Various methods exist to use video as a motivational tool.
Video enhances leadership knowledge development.
The “Total Recall” model optimizes video use in learning environments.

The speaker aims to introduce how video can enhance learning, inspire individuals, and develop leadership skills through this topic. The session focuses on four key takeaways:

  1. Empirical evidence confirms that video improves learning outcomes.
  2. Various strategies for using video as a motivational tool.
  3. How video contributes to leadership knowledge development.
  4. The “Total Recall” model as an evidence-based framework for optimizing video use in learning environments.

Research & Practical Experience:

  • Doug Clayton, while pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania, was challenged with the research question:
“To what extent does the incorporation of film impact the retention of information by course participants?”
  • During his tenure at a global satellite company in Luxembourg, he conducted a five-month global experiment with over 300 participants. His study compared video-enhanced change management courses with traditional training methods.

The results reinforced a key expectation from CEOs investing in training—learning and development must yield measurable, lasting impacts. His findings also validated Richard Mayer’s Dual Coding Theory, which suggests that multi-modal learning (such as video + text) significantly enhances knowledge retention.

Total Recall Model: Four Key Principles:

  1. Shorter is Better – Concise videos maximize engagement and retention.
  2. Leader Effect – Leadership presence in videos strengthens impact.
  3. Language Effect – The way messages are delivered influences learning effectiveness.
  4. Signaling – Clear visual and auditory cues improve comprehension.

Additionally, actively involving leaders in video production enhances their leadership skills while reinforcing learning content.

Leaders worked in groups of three to conceptualize, plan, shoot, and present short videos. Feedback revealed that the process fostered creativity, teamwork, and leadership development.

SUNNET Research Center Perspective

Doug Clayton’s research highlights the unique advantages of video as a learning tool. The findings not only support Dual Coding Theory but also demonstrate the practical application of video in corporate training and leadership development.

The Total Recall model provides a structured approach to integrating video into learning strategies. Short, well-structured videos, active leadership involvement, and clear messaging maximize learning effectiveness, offering a valuable framework for training program design.

Encouraging leaders to participate in video creation—from pitching ideas to production and presentation—enhances teamwork, project management, and leadership skills. This experiential learning approach represents an innovative model for leadership training.

In today’s digital and multimedia-driven world, video-based training holds vast potential. Leveraging short-form video and interactive multimedia tools can enhance engagement and significantly improve learning outcomes. Moving forward, organizations should actively explore these innovative tools to transform education and leadership development.
