【Learning Science】The Power of Behavior Change: The Science of Storytelling | ATD 23 | Talent Development

Stories are a frequently used communication element by speakers. This is because stories are effective tools for triggering emotions and empathy, influencing people's behavior.

Whether you are a manager or part of a training unit, understanding the impact of stories on people not only enhances the influence of communication but also strengthens the resonance of learners with the learning content.

Hadiya Nuriddin is an expert in the field of learning strategy and instructional design with over 20 years of practical experience. In this presentation, she shares techniques for incorporating storytelling into courses and the scientific insights behind storytelling.

【Summary】Why can stories attract people and create resonance?

Why can stories attract people and create resonance?

The speaker, approaching from the perspective of training experience, shares that most trainers, when designing stories for courses, often think from the perspective of the speaker, neglecting the essence of storytelling. The speaker presents three key points to consider when designing course stories as reminders.

The story is just a way to convey intent, focusing on the speaker's purpose rather than the story itself.

The purpose of storytelling is to change employees' performance. The ultimate goal of corporate training is always to change employees' performance.

Changing performance comes from engaging stories. The speaker recommends starting from the listener's perspective, discovering the listener's thoughts, designing stories to evoke empathy, and creating further change.

The speaker also provides three directional strategies based on scientific insights, offering practical techniques to shape effective stories:

1. Syncing the Brain

Research has found that when listeners are actively engaged in understanding a story, they undergo the same brain patterns as the speaker. Based on this scientific discovery, the speaker provides the following three application techniques to increase the impact of stories:

(1) Linking the emotions in the story with the desired behavioral performance.

(2) Purposefully designing stories to evoke feelings, emotions, and meaning in listeners.

(3) Focusing on the subjective experiences of the protagonist in the story rather than objective facts and the environment.

2. Firing Up the Whole Brain

When people listen to stories, the brain regions responsible for understanding text and experiencing story situations work simultaneously. This gives the speaker the opportunity to add more sensory details to the story, such as smells, sounds, and touch, making listeners more immersed in the story. The speaker provides three application techniques to enhance the immersive experience for listeners:

(1) Creating sensory connections in the story environment, such as smells, weight, colors, etc., to stimulate listeners' imagination.

(2) Using descriptive language and action sentences to make it easier for listeners to create visual images.

(3) In online courses, placing story characters in realistic environments, such as actual office scenes.

3.Leveraging Brain Hormones

When a story triggers empathy in listeners, it also releases oxytocin, cortisol, and dopamine in the brain. Oxytocin creates empathy and strengthens connections with others; cortisol enhances focus; dopamine generates positive emotions and makes people more engaged in the story. The speaker, based on brain science, proposes application techniques:

(1) Creating a connection between brain responses and performance outcomes, such as introducing "stressful situations" into the story to make it more relatable to listeners.

(2) Effectively using the three brain substances mentioned above to stimulate listeners' empathy and increase their focus and engagement in the story.

(3) Carefully choosing story themes to avoid triggering excessive emotional responses in listeners and falling into counseling situations.

At the end of the speech, the speaker emphasizes once again that the story is only a means of communication, and the focus should be on the intended message.

【Suunet Insight】The Influence of Stories Creates Real Change

Hadiya Nuriddin vividly demonstrates the importance of storytelling in course design in her speech and emphasizes the effectiveness of using stories to improve employee performance. From her speech, it is deeply understood that stories are not just a form of entertainment; they have a powerful influence that can change our thoughts, emotions, and behavior. The reason stories have such power is that they can trigger emotions and empathy in people, allowing us to resonate with the characters in the story, ultimately prompting action.

Hadiya reminds us that, besides being a tool for conveying intent, stories should focus on the speaker's purpose. Whether in presentations, internal meetings, or business presentations, stories can resonate with the audience, making everyone realize the importance of the matter and creating a strong interest in the following content.

Similarly, in training courses, if the speaker simply explains concepts and skills one after another, people may be aware of the existence of these things, but they are easily forgotten over time. On the contrary, guiding course knowledge points through storytelling allows the audience to understand the importance of these things. Because stories incorporate concrete and real situations, they can exert the influence conveyed by stories in practical applications, enhancing the charm of empathy.

In conclusion, story design is a force that can trigger emotions and create resonance. If you can cleverly use stories when planning an expression, stimulate the audience's interest, and generate deep resonance on a spiritual level, you will create real change.
